Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Dealing with depression can be extremely difficult and it’s important to find a treatment that works for you and makes functioning each day a little easier. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to help stimulate nerve cells within the brain. This is found to help improve symptoms that are related to depression and is used when other methods just aren’t helping.

Battling Depression with TMS

During a TMS treatment, an electromagnetic coil is first placed against your scalp towards your forehead. This coil helps to deliver a magnetic pulse to stimulate nerve cells that are in charge of mood control and depression. The procedure is painless and can help stimulate your brain when other treatments for depression don’t seem to help.

Our psychiatrist will discuss your symptoms and how severe your depression is. If they determine that other methods aren’t doing what they should be, they might recommend TMS. You’ll be able to drive yourself home after your treatment because the procedure is noninvasive and doesn’t require any anesthesia. You’ll also be given earplugs to wear during the treatment.

You can expect that while the treatment is happening, you’ll be comfortable in your chair and you may hear clicking sounds. The procedure should last about 40 minutes and you’ll be awake and alert the entire time. The number of treatments needed will depend on your situation and how well you react to the procedure.

Once treatment is over, you may want to consider medication or talk therapy as an ongoing treatment once initial improvements have been made.
